Education and Culture Minister Mohammad Nuh said that five ministries had agreed to halt the recruitment of contract teachers in order to better manage teacher placement. This was based on a joint decree between the ministers of education and culture, administrative reforms, home affairs, finance and religious affairs.

“Contract teachers can’t blame anyone, we just want to manage teacher placement,” Nuh said in a press conference yesterday.

As many as 405 regencies are recruiting teachers, but the government says there are too many teachers already.

“That’s why we’re stopping it. If each regency promotes a contract teacher there will be too many teachers. If there is an overlap of teachers, this is what we must map,” said Nuh as quoted by tempointeractive.com.

Indonesian Teachers Union chairman Sulistiyo, said he understood the government’s decision but the government must first meet the number of required teachers.

“We’re lacking teachers in the country and contract teachers are really helpful in the teaching process. Obviously they have high loyalty,” he said. (dar)
