Muslim millennials should be careful in dealing with any online social media such as facebook, instagram, whatsapp and so fourth. In addition to having positive impacts, such social media also have negative ones on youth mental health.
"Being educated is a must for today's generation especially Muslim millennials that have highly been involved with their mobile phones," Deputy Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama Scholars Association (ISNU) Dr. KH. Ahmad Suyuthi told NU Online here on Wednesday.
He said that the vast majority of teenagers had used social media accounts for an average of 4 hours each day. On account of their "playing-gadget activities, the teenagers or millennials have even been bullied online."
Suyuthi was of the opinion that most parents could no longer monitor their children social media account instead of providing good guidance in dealing with appropriate social media use.
"Whereas, the social media accounts could be used as a means of meeting with friends, families and other and a part of building the basis of their interactions," he said, adding that such accounts could build a shared identity based on solidarity values.
The director of the post-graduate program of Islamic University of Lamongan (UNISLA) called on all parents to keep communicating with their children in dealing with social media use. (Masdar)
