The leaders of the nation’s largest Muslim social organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), plan on meeting in Cirebon, West Java, this weekend to discuss terrorism and liberal democracy.<>

The meeting is to be opened by NU lawmaking body chairman Sahal Mahfudz on Saturday and closed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Monday, according to NU official Dedi Wahidi.

Meanwhile, Abdul Mun’im DZ, a deputy secretary-general of NU, said the group would discuss how liberal democracy has made the political system more chaotic.

“The national meeting will give an official response to these serious problems and will give recommendations on what the government and other state institutions should do,” Mun’im said in a press release.

According to Mun’im; political, economic and cultural liberalization have stemmed from the constitutional amendments that created the nation’s liberal democracy.

Mun’im said the meeting would make a strong statement on the increasing number of terrorism incidents in Indonesia and review the government’s programs to restrain radical religious groups.
