The Istiqlal Grand Mosque in Central Jakarta will be slaughtering 34 cows for Idul Adha, or the Islamic Day of Sacrifice, and distributing the meat to 9,000 recipients, beritajakarta.com reported on Friday (19/10).<>

Mosque manager Muhammad Wahyono said the mosque planned to distribute 9,000 coupons to the needy.

“Each coupon can be exchanged for 1 kilogram of meat,” he said as quoted by The Jakarta Post.

Wahyono said numbers could still increase as most people tended to donate sacrificial herds to the mosque three days prior to Idul Adha, which falls on Oct. 26. In 2011, the committee slaughtered 72 cows and 25 goats and distributed the meat to 11,000 coupon-holders.

The regulation to distribute meat using a coupon system was established in 2010 as a crowd-control measure. The mosque used to distribute meat immediately after the animals was slaughtered, which led to unruly behavior among awaiting recipients.

Wahyono added that the mosque was scheduled to receive sacrificial animals from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vice President Boediono one day before Idul Adha.
