Gus Mus : Education system must be improved

The rampant corruption involving government officials does reflect the attitude of uneducated people. Whereas, all of the public officials have got high-quality education and at least graduated from senior high schools. 

Deputy General Chairman of Lawmaking Body (Rais Aam) of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH A Mustofa Bisri (Gus Mus) made the remarks on the sidelines of a religious gathering at Sumber Payung Islamic School, Bataal Barat, Ganding, Sumenep,Madura,on Tuesday (26/6).

According to Gus Mus, one of efforts to prevent the chain of corruption is through educational institutions. Education capable of preventing people from corruption is the one that not only produces smart people, but is also capable of reinforcing good behaviors.

"Not a few of them have earned doctoral degrees and even become professors. It is bettter to be stupid than being clever but immoral," he said.

The leader of Raudlatut Thalibin Islamic boarding school (pesantren) was of the opinion that education in Indonesia had currently only produced smart people and ignored the importance of reinforcing good behaviors.

In turn, Gus Mus said, "the smarter the people are, the more corruption there will be," adding "good behavior in Indonesia is not important," following the fact that the study results of students are very detailed, while their good behaviors are only marked with good and or bad.

As for him, education was a bastion of corruption, the education system should be taken into account. "The education system needs to be improved."

Gus Mus said that educational institutions having so far been able to change bad behaviors to good ones were pesantren because in addition to teaching students, it has also propagated the importance of living a modest and ascetic life.
