Vice President Jusuf Kalla has asked the Indonesia's largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) to set an example of morality in Islam, considering that it cannot be expected to happen in Middle Eastern countries.<>
"NU should be able to become a leader in developing Islam in Indonesia," NU general chairman KH Said Aqil Siradj was quoted by Republika daily as saying here on Friday (30/01).
Said met with Jusuf Kalla to deliver an invitation for NU's 89th anniversary celebration, which will be held on Saturday night (31/01).
On NU's 89th anniversary, he noted, the Vice-President will inaugurate 23 of its universities and a mosque under the central office.
He remarked that NU wwould support the government to follow the constitution and improve the people's welfare.
"We will give our feedback or advice to the government if we find that its policies do not support the people," he affirmed.
When asked about the death penalty for drug dealers, he observed that NU agreed with the rejection of their clemency pleas.
He added that during the meeting, the Vice-President also suggested that the thoughts of both KH Mustofa Bisri and KH Abdurrahman Wahid be published into books, which should be translated into English and Arabic.
"Islam in Indonesia should become known to the international community," he said.
