Transnational Islamic movement has no spirit of nationalism

Transnational Islamic movement does not have the spirit of nationalism at all. Instead of basing on the nation state ideology, it bases its line of struggles on the international state, which is dominated by patterns of textual, fundamentalist and radical thoughts.<>

KH Imam Ghazali Said made the remarks on the sidelines of a workshop taking up issues on  "Transnational Groups: Between Ideality and Reality" held at the Kraksaan NU office, Probolinggo, Sunday (12/5).

At the workshop organized to commemorate the NU 90th anniversary, Said explained that many transnational Islamic movements in Indonesia had partially adopted modern ideas and instruments that are more easily developed and accepted by society.

"The reality on the ground shows that the such movements have undermined many local Islamic movements. Muhammadiyah bases in urban areas are now being undermined by the Muslim Brotherhood and Hizbut Tahrir," he said.

While the so-called Jamaah Tabligh and Hizbut Tahrir, he conrtinued, had undermined some important NU constituents in urban areas in addition to trying to undermine the NU puritans through pesantren approaches," he said.

"If you look at the trend, transnational movement has the potential to continue to grow," the leader of An-Nur Islamic boarding school (pesantren) Wonocolo said, adding that Nahdliyin (NU followers) to always be careful in dealing with such movements.

The workshop was attended by Deputy Chairman of Lawmaking Body of NU KH Amin Fathullah, Chairman of NU KH Nasrullah Ahmad Sudja'i and noard members of NU institutions, autonomous bodies.
